ODG USA Haiti Pilot Project

OneDollarGlasses are recognized for their on-the-spot customizable properties.  Therefore, they are a desirable complement to the fixed prescription inventory of glasses that optometrists use on eye care missions.  VOSH International (Pennsylvania chapter) conducts many such missions to different locations in Haiti each year.  Haiti is only a quick flight away from the US, but mired in extensive poverty and lack of access to healthcare options, including affordable eyeglasses.

In May 2018 Jennifer Hyde, ODG USA Executive Director and licensed optician, accompanied an optometric team to Pont Sonde, Haiti.  Throughout the course of the week about 1000 patients were seen including one woman who had a 3 day journey from a remote island just to get her glasses.  During this trial project, OneDollarGlasses were dispensed to several dozen patients.  The optometrist as well appreciated the ability to customize the exact right pair for hard-to-fit patients.   Follow up was done to see how the Haitian patients liked their OneDollarGlasses and a big thumbs up was received.  We are currently exploring ways to bring OneDollarGlasses to Haiti on a more widespread and permanent basis.
